American And British History Of Different Social Classes

The American and British history of different social classes is presented in the novel When the Sleeper Wakes by H.G Wells with a future world that has similarities to the social classes of the American and British histories. One way Wells demonstrates the distinction between classes is with the colors of their clothing. The young boy that pushes in the tailor’s machine is described as wearing clothing made of â€Å"coarse pale blue canvas† (Wells, 105). This is to show that based on the color he is owned by the Labour Bureau, which are all unskilled workers, whose tasks are made so simple that anyone could do it. This boy is expected to grow up to be in the class he was born into, which is the lower class. The novel also describes that the Labour Bureau uses them as slaves. The lower class citizens are being indoctrinated so that they will not think on their own and realize how and why they are being treated this way. This is a way of controlling them and keeping them from banding together and initiating a rebellion against the upper class in this novel. One part of the upper class in the story is the all-powerful council. This council not wanting to give up control to Graham, plot to have him killed. They believe killing him will preserve their world that they have created. Summary Of The 18th Chapter Of Alan Taylors American...

The subject of this chapter summary will be the eighteenth chapter of Alan Taylor’s American Colonies. The chapter is called â€Å"The Great Plains† and discusses the history of that geographical region from 1680-1800. Taylor begins by explaining how warfare both sustained and weakened New Mexico. It maintained unity, because without an external enemy to focus on, the Pueblo people would rise up in revolt against Mexico. However, the constant warfare discouraged any new settlers from putting down roots there. Spains holdings in North America were weakened by the foreign policy of the motherland, which focused on the colonial core of the territory, not the exterior regions. For Mexico, New Mexico was just a buffer zone between itself and other†¦show more content†¦Taylor describes how most of their well being was based around horticulture, a couple of annual trips dedicated to hunting buffalo. Subsequently, the author spoke to the religion of the tribes in the G reat Plains which, like most Native religions, was based on a dualism between life and death. A few tribes were not villages, instead living a nomadic lifestyle and following the herds of buffalo wherever they roamed. The nomads became collectively known as the Apache. Almost everything they ate, wore, and owned was provided by the buffalo. In the next section of the chapter, Taylor discusses the Genizaros. Essentially, this was the term used for Native American slaves who served in the households of governors and other officials. These slaves were taken from the nomadic Apache, but not without cost. In retaliation, the Apache would attack colonial settlements and kidnap or kill anyone living there. Oftentimes, the Pueblo people and the lower-class colonists were the ones who suffered most, not the officials who actually held the Genizaros. Another important section of this chapter was simply called â€Å"Texas†. The author provides the context of the Great Plains in 1720 inc luding the French-Spanish rivalry and the corresponding rivalry between the Pawnee and Wichita Indians and the Apache and Pueblo Indians. The Spanish colonies were populated mostly with unarmed missionaries, while the French-controlled regionsShow MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. Henry James Essay Return To America Example For Students

Henry James Essay Return To America Henry James writings, particularly ‘The Portrait of a Lady’I read this book out of interest for another Henry James piece, liking Daisy Miller so much. I found that this book, as in Daisy Miller, has a female point of interest throughout. Isabel Archer is a young American girl brought to Europe after her father has died in America. Isabel is an independent girl, easily noticed by many others in her circle. I felt that Isabel was a woman in her time, in that she took notice of things that she wouldn’t have without certain without the opportunities she was given. In America she would have see and done other things, but in Europe she saw so much opportunity. I like the carefree attitude she had, but with the regard for her elders and common courtesy. The example in the book about being a proper young lady when it was not looked at very well that she stay up ‘alone’ with her cousin and another young man. She had asked her aunt to help her and tell her whe n she is doing, or about to do something saw as improper. I admired that. I think nowadays young women would revolt against proper if it meant something they did not wish to do. Henry James’ writing was interesting to me in that he gave these characters a real life, with real life struggles and even consequences. I enjoy reading his work, very much like I enjoy watching and reading Jane Austen pieces as well. The time period is interesting to me and what is proper of a lady. That is a large piece of the world I do not understand. I am very much happy to see a woman and a man as equals. Of course there are things in society that women don’t do, or just aren’t a part of, but I am not one to be against that. What’s else interesting in the reading of ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ is that Isabel fell to something she would have been totally against if she had known the creature from another experience. The man she married was awful, and yet she married him with the idea that she was happy and that he was wonderful. He was exactly the type of man that, I think, kept her from getting married at all in the beginning. But, yet as a woman she felt the obligation to follow her husbands interests and thoughts, even though she was very much against them. Henry James initially describes a character as they enter the piece, but throws bits and pieces out as the book progresses to give the reader more to chew as they read. I like this strategy because it keeps the reader interested in what is going to happen or become of their favorite/least favorite character of the piece. The best is that all while the book the reader is told that Pansy’s mother has died and that she was raised by Mr. Osmond her entire life along with the convent. Pansy is a quiet girl, listens to her father, in fact obeys her father’s every wish. She does not want to disappoint father by doing anything he has forbidden. I find it interesting it is not until almost the very end of the book that we find out that Pansy is the daughter of Mrs. Merle and Mr. Osmond, during a 7-8 year affair. This is a character that James does not reveal much about, Mrs. Merle, only that she is a widow and a friend of Mrs. Touchett. I feel this information was key to the entire plot of the book, because knowing such things may have swayed the decision of Isabel to even be aquanted with either Mr. Osmond or Mrs. Merle in a friendly fashion. .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .postImageUrl , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:hover , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:visited , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:active { border:0!important; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:active , .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u00ac0a77f6bd257ea5164eadcf98da6c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Food, Inc. And The Food Industry Essay We will write a custom essay on Henry James Return To America specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I see a character transition of Isabel, from a bright young vibrant adventurous lady, to a wife and mother to Pansy, with worries and responsibilities. Throughout the reading several characters note on how she has ‘changed’, which I don’t think she sees herself, until the day with her cousin when he is dying. Until that day, she knows she has made a terrible decision and will live with it, but does not tell anyone about it nor recognize the changes she has gone through in her journey. The cousin speaks to her of his mistake and how he has brought all this on her, because of the inheritance and apologizes, but Isabel fesses up to the mistakes she has made marrying Mr. Osmond. She also confesses that Mr. Osmond only married her for her money. This, I feel, is a real transition for Isabel to speak of. I feel that she only spoke of it because it was her best friend that she was talking to and that she truly loved her cousin, from the beginning as he did her. We will never know what has happened to Isabel, Pansy and the rest as all we know is Isabel went back for Rome. I feel this ending to be perfect. Those of us who want to, can believe that she went back, got Pansy and told Mr. Osmond off like she should have a long time ago. That’s probably not what she did though, knowing the time and what was expected. Also knowing that she did not want to be improper, changes what I wish she would have done, being in current time. I’d like to think that something did happen to Mr. Osmond to make him suffer the way Isabel has. I really enjoyed this book and will recommend it to anyone who enjoys Henry James or even the time period of the Jane Austen novels. I know that these types of pieces are considered realism, but I see some romanticism in it also. I see it in the idea of who will marry and to the person they will marry. The idea of being arranged to marry someone is also true in this piece. The thought of who and when to marry these days is a different sort of decision, most of the time. Then in that day, it was who was rich, important in society and maybe a good looking catch. But, now it’s about love and relationships and I don’t know how things have changed so much. Sometimes I wish that I’d been born back in those times, even if I don’t believe in some of the behavior. I will definitely buy another book from Henry James or another author similar to the pieces done by Henry James. I really enjoyed the thoughts I came upon while reading this book. The world was definitely a different place and women were definitely viewed and treated very differently than today. They were also treated differently than before this time, when they might have just gone along with what was expected of them. Women of this time had a certain independent nature, which they wished to explore whether they acted it out in such as way as Isabel Archer, Daisy Miller or another literary figure of that time. I think it was crucial to the development of society that is today and to the women’s movements of the past, present and future. English Essays

System Analysis and Design Documentatio Essays

System Analysis and Design Documentatio Essays System Analysis and Design Documentatio Essay System Analysis and Design Documentatio Essay Introduction The computer is most likely one of the great technologies ever invented. Nowadays, people tend to see the future with computers in it. Presently computers have influenced the society and they do more than simply compute. Computers can now be on office tool and commonly used in businesses. More complex information can be collected and explored with the use of computer-based information system. Information technology nowadays, invaded the workplace and served modern corporations a proficient infrastructure. Due to futuristic ideas of people, they tend to use an information system to their businesses. Some even pay a high amount of money in order to obtain an information system. Though in reality futuristic ideas of people or company owners is only one of the few reasons why people choose to have an information system. There are many businesses that play a vital role in the society. And the researchers focus on Health care, specifically Dental Health care. According to Ardee Joy’s thesis regarding a patient information system that whether information is handwritten or entered electronically, the medical orders become a part of a patient is very important for dental records are mostly gathered when a person dies. Health care is the preservation of mental and physical health by preventing or treating illness through services offered by the health professionals. Whereas, dental health is preservation of the tooth and preventing or treating various problems of the tooth. According to Taylor of the book ‘qualitative research methods, the public requires a health facility which can also be applied to a dental facility four qualities of their health or dental care system, these are quality, affordability, security and access. A manual based system or a method of collecting and storing data or information using paper, can achieve only few of the four requirements. That’s why people or business owners or in the researcher’s case dental facility owners turn to information technology for support. According to Harrison (2006) of the book entitled â€Å"The role of clinical information systems in health care quality improvement†. It says that the quality of a computer based information system is higher than a manual based system for a manual based system consists of more problems rather than a computer based information system. That is why private sectors, health or dental care providers are moving away from traditional paper based medical or dental records to electronic versions. A dental clinic information system or dental office information system is a system made for owners of dental clinic. This system is only suitable for a dental clinic, dental clinic information system is different from a medical information system for medical covers the medical condition of a patient while dental clinic information system only covers the dental condition of a patient. A dental Information system consists of patient information system, where  the entire patient’s information and a few question regarding their health and dental history are collected and stored. This system excludes the amount of the treatment that has been offered though the treatment is recorded in Patient Information system. A Billing system is where the computation of the amount of each treatment offered to its patient and its total amount. Some even add the usage of credit or debit cards in billing system. A dental information also includes the reservation of appointments to the dentist assigned to the treatment the patient wanted. The researchers decided to make a dental information system in order to reduce or eliminate paper works. Institutional errors, human errors and time cost can be substantially reduced and coordination of each worker will be improved. Background of the Study Manual based system is very often in a newly opened establishment just like Sibulo-Gutierrez dental clinic which opened just last year, 2011. Though the company is passed through generation the Sibulo-Gutierrez just opened its facilities in 2011. The other owners have closed their facilities. A manual based system can be determined when a company or a business uses paper in collecting and storing confidential files. Presently the Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic is still running with the use of a manual based system. The manual processes are; writing the dental information of the patient on an index card; recording the patient information, medical and dental history on a piece of paper; placing the billing information on another separate piece of paper; and on a calendar the scheduled appointments of each dentist. Based on the researchers’ observation, the manual based system of the Sibulo-Gutierrez dental has several problems such as the security measures, efficiency, or time cost, money cost, and reliability. Security measures or control measures for the researchers have observed that even an unauthorized person can access the manual based system of Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic. Efficiency or time cost in a manual based system is noting down of information and this takes time. Money cost for buying bundles of papers would cost a big amount of money. The Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic has a computer inside their clinic that they use for entertainment as what has the researchers observed. If the Dental Clinic will have a computer based information system is money cost will lessen. Reliability is the quality of being dependable. A computer based information system is more reliable compare to a manual based system for in a computer based information system, files will not get easily lose unless the user didn’t save the information correctly. The researchers therefore conclude and decided to propose a Dental Clinic Information System for Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic. The researchers aim to make a system that will contain a patient information system, billing system and appointment reservation system. A patient information system is a system where all the information relating to the patient is recorded and stored. A billing system on the other hand, is a system where the amounts of each treatment are stored and computed. This will also contain the payments made by the patient. And an appointment reservation system contains the appointment made or requested by the patient. These three systems will be connected to each other in terms of the name of the patient and dentist, the treatment made to the patient, and the date. The researchers considered four things in order to say that the system is essential to the dental clinic. One, the quality of the system will help the company for it reduce time and energy in searching such information. Two, affordability for instead of buying tons of paper and index cards, the company only needs a personal computer. And the last two are security and access. Anyone in the company can use the system for it has instructions that can be easily understood by the users. The records and confidential files are also secured for the system has a log in system so that the user can only open and see the records. Scope and limitation The researchers aim to conduct a study of Dental Clinic Information System for Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic. In this chapter, a provision of information regarding the scope and limitation of the researchers’ system will be stated. This will help in knowing the capabilities of the said system and the system’s limitations. The study involves observation on how the manual based system of the company works. The outcome of the observation will help the researchers know what the system would look like. The researchers would like to emphasize more on Dental Clinic Information System wherein there are subsystems which are Patient Information System and Billing System. The patient information system revolves around the recording of the brief patient information, medical and dental history and also recording the patient’s dental check-up and the treatments to be done on the patient. The billing system on the other hand, covers the name of the patient, the treatment made, the dentist’s name who made the treatment the amount of each treatment, and the total amount of all the treatment. The study also covers the listing of appointments of patients to the dentist. The system is limited to the credit or debit cards. The company doesn’t accept credit or debit cards due to various requirements that aren’t met by the company. So with that, the researchers didn’t include credit and debit card processes to the system for it will not be necessary for the company is not necessary. Though the system doesn’t accepts debit or credit cards, they still accepts health cards namely; maxicare, healthwise, intellicare, Filipinodoctors, forturecare, omni, asianlife and philcare. The system does not also have a sign up application; though it has a log in system other user cannot create another account for it. The company only prescribes medicine but does not sells, so the system only contains the prescriptions. The user of the proposed system will be the secretary of the Dental Clinic. The patient will still answer the patient form using the paper, but afterwards the secretary will be the one who will encode the records to the database for the future use and for storing. Statement of the problem This study is intended to design and develop a dental information system for Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic. 1 . What are the problems encountered in the current system of the Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic in terms of the following: a. Recording; b. Billing; and c. Schedule Reservation. 2. What are the features or characteristics to be measured in terms of the following: a. security; b.data accuracy; and c. user-friendly 3. What are the recommendations that the dental clinic can obtain in terms of the following: a. Dentist; b. Patient; and c. Future Reader? Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature Local literature According to Lumbers (2002) a thesisist who made a study entitled, â€Å"a Systematic Enrolment Process Using Database System in Saint John Academy. Calamba, Laguna†. She stated that a database application will increase the efficiency of the enrolment process in the school. In the researchers study, efficiency is one of its aim for the dental clinic lacks efficiency in finding such records. With the use of a database, Information will be recorded properly in a database. And searching such information will be easily found with just one click. According to Lazaro’s(2004)study entitled â€Å"Liceo delos Banos record management system†, confidential records should kept in a database where only authorized person/s can be able to access. The researchers company, Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic, has many confidential files sush as information about the patients and dentists. A log in application where only authorized people know the password and username should be able to access the database. According to Velasco (2002), maintaining records manually is a very difficult task and very time consuming. In his study entitled â€Å"Maulawin National High School Student Information System†, he decided as a resolve to the manual based system of recording files he conducted a computerized system which will lessen or diminish the problem. The researcher’s problems are the same on Velasco’s, and the answer to those problems the researchers proposed a system that will diminish the company’s problem. Foreign Literature Computers are very flexible in terms of usability. Silverman and Turkey stated in their book â€Å"Computer Language†, that computers plays an important role in people’s daily work and leisure activities. Many circumstances a person can think that will need an involvement of a computer such as engineering, manufacturing, scientific and in the researcher’s case business and health care. Business and health care are two important activities for this study for the researchers will do this study for the business of the owners of the dental clinic. And health care for the establishment that will benefit the study is a healthcare institution. The researchers believed that the existence of the computer is a great turning point to people. It does not only concerns large companies but also to the small business who are really willing to put everything a systematic way of managing form a very simple paperwork for the monitoring of customers. According to Alcaira (1999), he stated that using computers will help the person to acquire a new knowledge for the person will not use papers in recording files but a system that is especially made for that company or business. Alcaira also said that handling information manually is conflicting. The researchers will make a system that will be easy to understand and use or access, the person who will use the system is guaranteed that he will not have a hard time figuring things out. The Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic as have said uses a paper Based System. This System will cost more time for the user always needs to rearrange information in a way where it will be easily collected when needed. The researchers considered a computer based system for Hammer (2003) stated that a computer or a computer based system could eliminate the need for copying or rearranging information. Hammer also stated that a computer can do computations in short according to Hammer computer can eliminate most of the paperwork. Porcelain jacket crown- are full porcelain ceramic crowns cover that protects the entire surface of a tooth. 10. Secretary- the user of the system. Chapter 3 Conclusion 1. Based on the researchers study, system and observation various conclusions were sought. The researcher concluded that there are problems on the current system of the Sibulo-Gutierrez Dental Clinic. The researchers saw the problem in recording information, billing and reserving an appointment. The common problems in recording information are money cost for paper is an expensive material especially when an individual uses a large amount every day, time cost for writing consumes a lot time and lack of efficiency for writing as have said consume time. In the billing the common problem is money cost for the paper expenses. In the reservation, the problem is using a calendar which consumes space to the table and not enough space for the information to be written. 2.The researchers included features in the Dental Clinic Information System which corresponds to the three categories namely; security, accuracy and user –friendly. For the security, the researchers include a login application. With this feature the confidential records will be secured to the people who want to access the dental Clinic Information System. For the accuracy, the researchers designated formulas in order to automate the computations in the system. This feature will eliminate the use of calculators. The Dental Clinic Information System has instructions that can be easily understood by the user. This feature is considered user friendly by the researchers for the system with this instructions, won’t be a burden to the user. 3. The researchers can recommend the dental Clinic with our system to other dentists, patients of the said dental clinic and to the future reader of the researchers documentation. The Dentist of other dental clinic can adapt the system so that their encountered problems while they use the manual based system can be omitted. The patients can have less time in visiting the dental clinic. The future reader on the other hand can obtain more knowledge with the researchers documentation. Recommendation Based on the findings and conclusion, the researcher recommends the following: 1. A continues monitoring of system’s efficiency and reliability in meeting its objective shall be taken in place. 2. Possible restructuring or enhancement of the system is recommended, specially on the design interface, enhancement or normalization of the current database. 3. An evaluation is a recommended in order to test if the system did meet the expectations of the Dental Clinic.

language teaching and learning essays

language teaching and learning essays The Legend of 1900 is really a deep, significence movie which overwrought with personal philosophy. Through symbols, the features of 1900s personality and the questions he faced in life. The "Virginian" is a wonderful microcosm, a jumping off point for hundreds of thousands of immigrants. The vessel serves as a character herself, a place where both death and life abound. No gimmicks are used to make the ship into a character, but we still become attached to it and share Max's sadness as he surveys its final rotted interior, searching for the elusive nautical semi-poltergeist. We don't learn much about 1900 except his relationship to the Virginia; he jealously guards his talent against challenges and even keeps his music from being heard on a recording almost like a ghost who wants to be in control of his manifestations. Maybe he's the human child of the boat itself. On board the Virginian, anything seems possible for 1900. He has his music. He has an enthralled audience every crossing. He has friends like Max, who joins the ship's band. What he doesn't have is the ability to set foot on land. He is a true creature of the sea - apart, disconnected, viewing life from the safety of a piano bench or a ship's deck. In some ways he's as sadly isolated as Quasimodo perched among Notre Dame's spires. That is his weak point in his temperament. Nothing can get him to leave. Not Max's entreaties. Not a record producer's offers of fame and fortune. Not even an enigmatic, beautiful girl who represents all the promise of the unknown. The ship begins as 1900's floating cradle and ends, metaphorically and more, as his floating crypt. The sad truth is, instead of celebrating his genius, 1900's life is suffused with such a sense of moping terror and sheer "smallness" that the entire story shudders just to look at him. the shy, fragile charm of 1900. 1900 becomes a figure larger than life, a musician with ...

Nutrition, health, and wellness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Nutrition, health, and wellness - Essay Example Considering the general health of people, several organizations have come with a food guide pyramid, which serves as a guide for healthy eating. While the focus is on food, daily exercise and weight control form the basis of the pyramid as these, according to research conducted in several countries, have a strong influence on keeping the mind and body fit. The pyramid has a broad base which includes vegetables and whole grains and these should be consumed in sufficient quantities as they provide the much needed proteins to the body. This is followed by whole breads, fruits, olive oil and leafy vegetables which need to be consumed in lesser amounts compared to the first. Plant-based products are generally suggested by nutritionists as they provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to the body and they have low carbohydrates and are usually devoid of fats. The next portion in the pyramid includes fish, poultry and other sea foods and nuts which could be consumed in moderate amounts a s they contain considerable amount of healthy fats. Milk and other dairy products can be consumed in limited quantities mainly for their protein content and finally the upper tip of the pyramid contains red meat, potatoes and aerated drinks which are unhealthy nutrition wise and are can be avoided. Thus the pyramid is constructed keeping in mind the nutritional benefits provided by foods and the amount in which they can be consumed (The Nutrition). Both governmental and independent organizations formulate dietary guidelines and these are published for public viewing. The health department and the agricultural department of the US government have released their dietary guidelines. A similar healthy eating pyramid has been designed by the faculty of the nutrition department at Harvard School. The Food and Drug Administration has released its set of dietary guidelines for Americans. In addition there is also a dietary guidelines advisory committee (DGAC)
